Former Merchant O’Brien Makes MLB Debut

SEPTEMBER 28, 2021: Former Everett Merchant pitcher Riley O’Brien, made his major league debut tonight pitching for the Cincinnati Reds against the Chicago White Sox. Riley started the game and pitched 1.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out a pair.

O’Brien spent two seasons at Everett Community College and was a member of the 2015 Merchants (1-1, 5.40 ERA). Following his career at EvCC he transferred to the College of Idaho where he became an All-NAIA West selection in his two seasons while leading the Yotes to the 2016 and 2017 NAIA National Championships.

This season with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, he had a 7-7 record with 122 strikeouts. In his last start, O’Brien tossed five innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against Toledo.

He is the 17th alumni of the Everett organization to play in the big leagues.
