pitching coach - #21
Tim Kelly was named pitching coach for the Everett Merchants on October 24, 2016. For over
30 years, Kelly has been a pitching coach and scout.
He was the pitching coach for six years at Arizona State as the Sun Devils won the 1981 College
World Series in his first season. Kelly also worked at the highest levels in the scouting
departments of the California Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Tim's legendary baseball career began as a pitcher out of Anaheim, California. After his high
school career at Wilcox Prep in Anaheim, he pitched for the University of La Verne, Orange
Coast College, and Stanford University. After college he pitched three seasons of professional
baseball (1976-1978) and twice he was a MLB spring training invitee.
Following his playing days, Tim returned to the game as a Pitching Coach for Orange Coast
College in 1980 -- promptly developing a staff that helped OCC win the California State title. In
the summer of 1980 Tim joined Ben Hines in Fairbanks as an Assistant Coach for the Alaska
Goldpanners. The 1980 club won the state and national championship. Kelly was
then hired by Arizona State University, where he coached for seven season, including with the
1981 NCAA College World Series champions.
From ASU, Tim re-entered the world of pro baseball as a coach, scouting supervisor, and
Assistant Scouting Director for the California Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Washington
Nationals. Kelly is credited with the signings of Tim Salmon, Troy Percival, and Chad Curtis,
among many others.
Returning to amateur baseball, Kelly again coached for the Goldpanners in 2012, 2014-2016,
while serving as the Pitching Coach for Don Sneddon at Santa Ana College.
